St. Kitts International Academy Debating & Public Speaking Club - 21st January 2025

Dr George Gross

This was another excellent session at our St Kitt's International Academy Debating and Public Speaking club.

We began with a newsround covering the War in Ukraine, with North Korean involvement; A breakthrough with nuclear fusion; the story of a WWII veteran at 104; Trump plans and inauguration - from pulling out of the WHO and Paris Climate Agreement, and Presidential pardons (Biden & Trump); and the tragic story of the hotel fire in Turkey.

Our skills focus turned to Points of Information (POIs) again for our forthcoming debating competition.

For warm-up we looked at 'favourite words' and meeting a 'fictional character' from the history of literature.

From 'laughter' to 'brave' and from Sherlock Holmes to Winn-Dixie the dog we had a wonderful selection of responses and justification.

Our debates included the motions:

'This House would ban Tiktok'

Carried by a majority at the second telling, with a focus on creating a better learning environment for children.

'This House would research the Oceans before we tackle Space'

This was carried unanimously, with great emphasis on cost, and the absence of knowledge to date.

We then turned to a philosophical question on 'whether we are less happy in an age of technology'?

Here the majority felt we were, because of social media and the pressure of constant communication.

Finally, we asked whether 'animals should have the same rights as humans?'

All the more interesting given a recent US court ruling on Elephants and their rights.

Voting remained split at the second telling.

Well done all on another super session!
