This was a great session of debating, discussion and questions.
We began by focussing on our key skills for the week:
A further look at Objectivity, and in addition, working on starting a debate with a strong opening statement.
We followed this with an interview style question, 'if you could take up a new subject, what would it be and why?'
Answers included:
RE
Dance
Accountancy
Cricket
IT
It was very good to hear a range of responses from creative options to life skills beyond the classroom.
Our newsround took in:
The tragic bus/stadium incident in China
Shootings/Gun crime in the USA
Trump's election
Nevis School football primary tournament
COP29 Azerbaijan
Public lecture series at the St Kitt's Court
Our debates centred on:
Motion/Question (i) Armistice Day / Remembrance Day - 'Should we continue to remember?'
The group felt that it was vital to remember the 'sacrifice' of those that have fought for our freedoms, and that such days helped us to consider those heroes with the right level of 'appreciation'.
Motion/Question (ii) 'This House would continue to work with the USA, following the election of Donald Trump'
Here the group divided, 80% / 20%. The majority felt that the USA remains a key economic partner and ally for St Kitts (as with much of the world).
Motion/Question (iii) 'Should we use renewable materials in Space?'
The group voted 60%/40% in favour, following a Japanese project, that has explored the use of wood for satelittes.
The opposition here were concerned about deforestation and the science behind wood in space. The proposition argued for moving away from plastic wherever possible.
We ended the session by asking whether smart phones make us smarter (the group felt they did not) - and exploring an unseen on a recent largescale cheese theft in the UK.
Well done all for such superb contributions!
