American School of London - 22nd January 2025

Dr George Gross

We started this week by discussing the news, with the recent happenings in the USA obviously taking precedence. In an exercise to encourage public speaking, each student then individually stood up and said which new subject they wish was taught in schools and why, in addition to explaining what their favourite word was.

As a group, we looked at the recent banning of TikTok by the US and debated what should be done next? Should the ban be lifted and so on. Some good points were made about not only the use of data by foreign countries but also the impact of social media on mental health.

The main debate today was looking at whether we should spend our money and resources exploring further into space or the oceans. Students made some great POIs (our focus this week in skills), with the the team arguing for further space exploration winning the debate.

Following this, we had further discussions on whether technology was making us less happy, with the majority of the class putting both sides of the argument. We finished the session looking at Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup Cans and had a fantastic discussion about mass production and recognising what is “art”.

A great session!
